Located in the Moroccan province of Al Haouz at the end of a 17 km track at 2000 metres high, the village of Tizgui is home to 1380 villagers. Since the earthquake of September 8, 2023, the villagers have been adjusting and working hard to ensure that life goes on as smoothly as possible. Despite the difficulties of surviving in the present and the uncertainty of the future, the villagers’ sense of mutual aid and resourcefulness has led them to become even more united than before.
From life in tents to pandemics and falling rocks, insecurity is ever-present in the villagers’ daily lives. It is under these conditions that the villagers are taking up the challenge of reviving the village’s socio-economic activity. Men have taken over transport and schooling, transporting foodstuffs and setting up tents. Many fathers have chosen not to work in town, in order to restructure their households and contribute to the effective running of the village. Women show empathy in dealing with the cycle of births and deaths, and the stress of life in the tents for mothers and their babies. All of them know that, faced with the mental burden of maintaining life in a home that no longer exists, sisterhood can make all the difference. Over the seasons, the village has become a strong model of resilience. As the epicentre of festivities for the neighbouring valleys, the village celebrated the week of Aid al Adha in an intense moment of sharing. To overcome the fear of the future, the villagers chose to live out a tradition that is dear to them, under the banner of solidarity and faith in life.
