On hold

In the douar of Ait Zitoune (Amzghroni valley), the inhabitants are starting to raze the ruins 8 months after the earthquake. A partnership is being established between a property promoter and the villagers. It will not be possible to rebuild on the same site because of falling rocks.

Since the earthquake that devastated the Amazigh villages of the Al Haouz valley on September 9th 2023, the inhabitants of the High Atlas have had their lives on hold. The villagers have many responsibilities in ensuring a day-to-day existence on a makeshift basis. Villagers are struggling to survive in a battered landscape with no prospect of reconstruction.

Daily life has become a painful reality shared by all. Life in the tents and containers is a close-knit community, with many sanitary problems. Mourning resonates in people’s minds, and the fear of new tremors is omnipresent. Exposed to an intensified mental burden, the villagers have to cope with increased economic insecurity and an uncertain future, giving priority to family unity and community cohesion. All the villagers know that reconstruction will be a challenge and that the future rests on their shoulders.
